Sesame Snaps, Canadian Goodness!

So when DH and I moved from Canada to the USA 14 years ago, we noticed that they didn't have one of our loved snacks, Sesame Snaps! It is such a simple treat, yet it seems so complex at the same time!

Well, lately we have been having a lot of different seeds and nuts on our salads and yogurt, etc. DH decided he wanted to get some sesame seeds for snacks in his trail mix. It got me to thinking about Sesame Snaps! I thought, man, I should just make my own. How hard could it really be? So I went on a Google search. I found a few different recipes and they were interesting, so I combined a few different aspects of what I found, into my own recipe.

Here it is:

Karma's Sesame Snaps

1 1/3 c. Toasted Sesame Seeds
1 1/2 c. Brown Sugar
1 T. Butter
2 T. Honey
1/4 Fresh Squeezed Lemon
1/4 t. Vanilla

FIRST: Grab a cookie sheet, preferably one with no edges. Butter or spray it with cooking spray. Also butter or spray a rolling pin and have these items ready as you will have to act quickly when everything is done cooking.

If you don't have toasted sesame seeds you can toast your own. I threw mine in a pan and turned it on medium and stirred them for a few minutes. Never leave your seeds on the stove unattended as they WILL burn! You will want to watch them very carefully. Another way you could do it is to put them on a baking pan in the oven at 350°F (180°C) and stir them a few times for 20 minutes. Set these aside.

In a small heavy sauce pan, you will want to combine all ingredients but NOT the sesame seeds. Stir the brown sugar, butter, honey, lemon and vanilla together on a medium heat with a candy thermometer until it gets to 310 degrees or to hard crack stage. It should be an amber color when it is ready.

Take the candy mixture off the heat and quickly stir in the sesame seeds. Coat the seeds thoroughly and then pour the whole mixture onto the cookie sheet. Press everything down and then roll it out on the pan. You should be able to cover most of the pan. Now, grab a pizza cutter or a knife and score it into pieces. If you wait too long, it will be too hard and it will just crack into chunks rather than having a nice smooth edge.

Once this has cooled a bit, but not all the way, remove the pieces from the sheet and place them on a plate to cool the rest of the way. If you wait too long, they could stick to the cookie sheet.

Apparently these will keep for a week in an air tight container, but I don't see why they can't keep for even longer in the fridge or even in the freezer.

DH was so surprised when I made these and our son even ate them and liked them. Now that is a rare thing from such a picky eater!

Studio Tips
- Locking each item on your page is a smart way to avoid moving or deleting that object. But locking every item on each page of your book can take a lot of clicks. You can do it in one click! On your "Edit" menu, you'll find a "Lock" option. Click to see a drop-down menu with the following options: lock all on the page, unlock all on the page, lock all in the project, and unlock all in the project.
- Do you ever want to stretch an object, but you don't want to have to go to the Layout tab to unlock proportions, make your change, and then lock proportions again? You can stretch an object quickly and easily just by holding down the Shift key on your keyboard as you drag the sides of the object. When you release the Shift key, the proportions of your object will automatically default to "locked" again.
- After you've swapped a photo, if you want to make adjustments to the current photo on the page, lock it first and then go to the "Tools" tab on your toolbox. When your image is locked, you will see "scale" and "rotation" that aren't available when the photo is unlocked.

Fall Mantel & Fall Goodies Party! UPDATE

Hey all you Fall Mantel Party Hoppers!

So here is my fall mantel so far... This was my first effort and I am sure like many, it will evolve through out the Fall season. I plan to add some pumpkins and gourds... Right now I thought I was a little clever adding a fall garland to a frame and then putting my favorite fall scrapbooking pages inside of it. I need to rethink the actual mantel part though, lol! Today I thought of how the Nester said to bring I some nature... so I was thinking about cutting some small branches off my oak tree with the yellow leaves on them and putting them in a vase for the left side, what do you think? P.S. Do you recognize my wall color? It is supposed to be the famous Tobacco Road! Although it looks a little green! ;)

OK, after seeing all the wonderful mantels in the mantel party, I got some inspiration. I had to steal things from other parts of the house, but I think for now, I am happy with this!

OK, so I decided to photograph some of my other"Fall" things and join the Fall Goodies Party too! So here they are:

I love this wreath, but I don't think it is working with this door. I think that it blends in too much. What do you think?

Leave 1/8” Margin Around Page – Did you know that you need to leave a 1/8” margin between the edge of the page and anything you don’t want to get cut off? Yes, the gray box around the page shows you where your page should be cut off in production. But the page cutters can sometimes go slightly over that marked spot. To be safe, make sure you have a 1/8” margin around your entire page.

Use Ctrl Button for Swapping – As you drag an element onto the page, hold down the ctrl key (or if you have a Mac hold down the Cmd. key). The element, then, should swap without any problems.

I know it's been a LONG time since I posted to my blog! Sorry about that! I have been super busy and have been contending with wisdom tooth extraction. I also have some exciting news coming up soon... but no, I'm not pregnant, lol!

My Lifetime Story - 2010 Faithbooking Challenge Announcement

As the year is coming to an end we are busy planning for next year. In 2010 we are going back to the basics of leaving a legacy of faith. This years challenges are all focused on YOU and your lifetime story. When you join us in this challenge you will be creating a mini-autobiography. We are counting down the days till January 6th because we are so stinkin' excited about the My Lifetime Story challenges!!!

Wouldn't you love to know what your grandma's favorite toy was as a child, how she felt when she met your grandpa, her favorite scripture and the song that expressed her heart? Your children and grandchildren will have that treasure when you join us in this challenge!

We will start out with your family roots in January and move into your childhood in February. We will continue throughout the year with your teen and adult years as well. The last challenge of the year will be a letter to your future generations or anyone who reads your book.

Each of our stories is important. This is a book that everyone should create about themselves. It will be the most treasured album of your family. As you create this album about your lifetime story you will be leaving YOUR LEGACY OF FAITH. This is an album that can make an impact in your life as you create it, but it will also create a major impact in the lives of your family both now and in future generations. As your children read your story in this scrapbook that YOU created, they will take your stories to heart. Your stories may have more impact on them than even Bible stories, because they are personal and from someone they know and love . When friends and neighbors pick up your storybook and look through it you will be witnessing without even saying a word. They will read your lifetime history and discover your love of Jesus, and His forgiveness and faithfulness in your life!

The My Lifetime story challenges will begin the first Wednesday in January. A new challenge will be posted each Wednesday all throughout 2010. The last challenge will be posted the last Wednesday of December. Just because the challenge series ends at the end of 2010 doesn't mean your lifetime story album is finished. We will continue to offer periodic challenges to continue your autobiography and keep it current.

Please join us in this year long challenge! Some of these challenges may be layouts you have already completed. That is ok! We need to get these all compiled in your lifetime storybook. Everyone deserves to be the star of their own book, including and most importantly YOU! If you don't put some time aside to create your My Lifetime Story album now, you may never find the time. If something were to happen to you, would your legacy of faith be lost forever? Take action now, join us as we create our lifetime storybooks for the next generation to see the glorious work the Lord can do in the life of a woman that loves God!

Begin thinking about what size album you would like to use for your My Lifetime Story challenge. Michelle started hers in an 8x8 but now has decided that she needs more space so is moving up to a 12x12. Sunny is doing hers 12x12 also because she knew she had a lot she wanted to fit into this album. What size do you prefer? Start gathering your supplies now so you will be ready to start when we kick off the first challenge January 6th!

Next week we will post a Photo List so you can start gathering photos that you will need for this challenge.

Baby Update & A Freebie

Hey everyone!

Just an update on my quest to have another baby... we are looking at over $7000 to get pregnant this time around. I have had some health issues that the doctor has found that we are trying to take care of right now. If I had the money and all the procedures that we are doing to make sure I am healthy to carry a baby, go well, then I could be trying in a few months. But at this time the $7000+ isn't looking like it's going to come anytime soon. So, just continued prayers for this would be appreciated, for health and funds.

Thanks to all of you who have supported me! I will be adding $7500 more to my goal for fundraising... yes it's big! But I know one day it will happen!

David keeps hinting that it would be a great idea for me to do a page every month that has the best photos included for that month on it. So, I went ahead and did January! Here it is!

My Niece Jolie Turned TWO and what a cutie she is! She lives in Australia, I can't wait to see if she has a little accent when she comes to visit this summer!

Shanna lives in Australia and it's hard not having her and her family near us, but we love to talk via SKYPE on the internet. For the next 6 weeks I will be doing challenges based on a story by an unknown author. The story is about the true meaning of the Christmas Symbols. Each week we will take the different symbols in the story and do pages with them. After the 6 weeks are over and including the challenges from the last 3 weeks, you should have a beautiful reminder that you can share with your family every Christmas as to what the TRUE Meaning of Christmas is and that is of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
